Writing

Early mark making, fine‑motor development and sensory exploration form the foundation of our writing curriculum at Park Lane School.

As pupils progress, they learn to:

  • copy shapes, patterns and letters

  • use phonics, symbols or word recognition to construct meaning

  • build vocabulary and structure ideas

  • develop composition skills appropriate to their cognitive and physical needs

  • write for different purposes and audiences

  • use their writing outside of school to access different opportunities in the community, such as work-based placements.

We use a variety of multi-sensory approaches in the delivery of our writing curriculum and work closely with the Occupational Therapists to ensure early detection of any difficulties that may affect writing skills and put in place suitable interventions, to remove any perceived barriers.

Alternative recording methods (e.g typing, dictation, symbol writing, scribing) are used where needed to ensure pupils can express meaning.

Pupil progress is measured against our own Park Lane Writing Lanes, which are based on the National Curriculum objectives but have been adapted by a multi-disciplinary team, including our English Lead, SaLT and Occupational Therapists, ensuring the aims meet the needs of our diverse learners and that progress is meaningful and achievable for all our students.
