Communication

At Park Lane School, every child is recognised as a communicator. Whether pupils use speech, sign, symbols, eye gaze, movement, vocalisations or behaviour, we value and respond to all forms of communication. Our aim is to ensure every learner feels understood, respected and able to express themselves in a meaningful way.

Our Approach

We use a Total Communication approach, combining many methods so each child can communicate in the way that suits them best. This includes personalised AAC systems, signing, symbols, objects of reference and communication technologies.

We work closely with families, teachers, support staff and Speech & Language Therapists to ensure each pupil has a communication pathway tailored to their needs.

What We Want for Every Pupil

  • To communicate in their preferred way

  • To be listened to and understood

  • To have access to the right tools, symbols or AAC devices

  • To be supported by skilled staff who know their communication needs

  • To learn in environments that reduce barriers and promote interaction

How We Support Communication

Teachers and Classroom Staff

  • Use each pupil’s communication profile to plan accessible learning

  • Model signs, symbols and AAC throughout the day

  • Work with therapists to ensure strategies are used consistently

Communication Team & SaLT

  • Complete detailed communication assessments

  • Support staff through modelling and coaching

  • Create personalised plans, resources and targets

  • Deliver specialist intervention and training

Communication Journey

Children progress through three flexible stages:

1. Multi‑Sensory Communication

Using objects, photos, music, signing, sensory cues and early symbols to help pupils make sense of their environment.

2. Assessment & Trialling Approaches

A multi‑disciplinary team assesses which communication systems best meet the child’s needs, leading to an action plan.

3. Review & Refinement

Regular reviews ensure strategies remain effective and are adapted as pupils grow and develop.
