Intensive Interaction
Intensive Interaction is a 1:1 communication strategy, developed by Dr Dave Hewett, that encourages meaningful interactions through staff responding to the behaviour of the student . Other key aspects of the approach are imitation, vocalisations, as well as being sensitive to the timing and tempo of interactions. Through these intensive sessions students often start to develop a desire to be engaged with others and often develop all aspects of social engagement such as eye contact, facial expressions, turn taking and developing a range of vocalisations. For further information please see Dr Dave Hewitt's website https://www.intensiveinteraction.org/ .
Dave has been into school to deliver training on Intensive Interaction and Katy Wadsworth has completed a course with him to achieve the title of Intensive Interaction coordinator. She uses this approach in school to great effect and has even visited Romania to work with orphans through a charity and used Intensive Interaction in this setting too. She has then in turn trained Dee French who now also holds a certificate in the technique. There are books and DVDs in school on the approach that can be borrowed and it is modelled daily by all staff, it can have astonishing results and is still one of the most favoured tools to hand for anyone and everyone. The best thing about it is that it can be done literally anywhere and the only tool you need, is yourself!
