Merlin Class

This half term, our topic is all about becoming ‘Global Warriors’, with a special focus on metal. Across our learning, we will explore how metal shapes our world, how it can be used creatively, and how we can protect our planet by understanding the impact of natural events and human choices.

English

In English, we will be diving into three wonderful stories that link beautifully to our theme and spark imagination:

  • The Tin Forest

  • Stella and the Seagull

  • Jonty Jentoo

Each book will help us explore the world around us, think about caring for our environment, and enjoy rich storytelling through a total communication approach.

Maths

In maths, our learning is all about measurement. We will be comparing:

  • Length

  • Weight

  • Height

We will learn through practical activities, hands-on exploration, songs, games, and plenty of opportunities to investigate real objects and materials.

Our Global Warriors Topic

Throughout the half term, we will explore what it means to be a global warrior with a focus on metal. This will link across our curriculum:

Community

We will be learning about natural disasters, how they happen, and the impact they have on communities around the world. This will help us understand how people respond, rebuild, and support one another.

Challenge

As part of our enterprise challenge, we will be designing and creating our very own metal fish, inspired by Valentine’s Day. These will be sold at the Enterprise Fair, giving us the chance to be creative, resourceful, and entrepreneurial.

Individuality

We will be thinking about the people who are important and special to us, and learning about how we can keep ourselves safe, both in school and in the wider world.

Creativity

Our creative focus this term is all about making music with metal. We will design and build our own metal instruments and collaborate with Barnaby Class to form a mini orchestra. This will give us the chance to explore sound, rhythm, teamwork, and performance.

Swimming

Swimming takes place every Friday, and we visit the Leisure Centre each week. Please ensure your child has their full swimming kit in school on Fridays.

Educational Visit

This half term, we are very excited to be visiting Jodrell Bank. We will discover how the incredible metal Lovell Telescope helps us learn about space, stars, and the universe. It will be a fantastic opportunity to see science in action.
